Out of Hours Veterinary Surgeon – Wales

  • Flexible rota designed around your lifestyle: Choose from patterns including 7 nights on / 14 nights off or 7 nights on / 21 nights off, giving you extended periods of time off between shifts.
  • 33.41 hours per week: A part-time permanent role offering a sustainable approach to OOH veterinary work and an excellent work-life balance.
  • ECC without the routine: Focus entirely on emergency and critical care, with no routine booked appointments, allowing you to concentrate on patients who need urgent clinical attention.
  • Up to £80,000 FTE + fantastic benefits: A competitive salary package, £1,000 CPD allowance, 5 days' CPD leave, full RCVS fees and generous annual leave.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Out of Hours Veterinary Surgeon to join a highly supportive and collaborative team in Cardiff.

This is an opportunity to enjoy the variety and clinical challenge of emergency work without some of the pressures traditionally associated with out-of-hours practice. With a manageable emergency-only caseload, predictable rotas and a strong focus on wellbeing, this role is ideal for a Veterinary Surgeon who is passionate about emergency and critical care and wants to build a sustainable long-term career in ECC.

With no routine appointments, you can focus your time and expertise on patients who genuinely require urgent veterinary attention.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality emergency and critical veterinary care to pets requiring urgent treatment.
  • Manage a varied caseload of emergency presentations across a broad range of clinical conditions.
  • Make calm, welfare-led clinical decisions in challenging situations.
  • Work collaboratively with an experienced multidisciplinary veterinary team.
  • Support and mentor Veterinary Students during shifts, helping develop their practical ECC skills in a real-world environment.
  • Contribute to the continued development and growth of an evolving emergency service.
  • Focus entirely on emergency medicine and urgent clinical care, with no routine booked appointments.

About You

The team is looking for an experienced and compassionate Veterinary Surgeon with strong clinical confidence and a genuine interest in Emergency and Critical Care.

You will ideally:

  • Be a qualified MRCVS Veterinary Surgeon with experience in emergency or hospital-based practice.
  • Have strong diagnostic and clinical decision-making skills.
  • Be confident managing emergency and critical cases independently.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Maintain a calm, compassionate and welfare-focused approach under pressure.
  • Have an interest in mentoring and supporting Veterinary Students.

Salary & Benefits

The successful candidate will receive a competitive salary of £63,500 – £80,000 FTE, including allowances, pro rata, alongside an extensive benefits package:
