Veterinary Surgeon – Sole Charge | Independent Practice | Essex | Up to £84,000

Salary: £72,000 – £84,000 per annum (£6,000–£7,000 per month)
Job Type: Full-time, Permanent
Schedule: 2 Weeks On / 2 Weeks Off (Full-Time Hours)

A genuinely independent small animal practice in Essex is seeking an experienced and surgically confident Veterinary Surgeon to join its close-knit clinical team in a sole charge capacity.

This is an outstanding opportunity for a vet looking for true clinical autonomy, a varied caseload, and a rota that offers substantial time off while maintaining full-time earnings. The successful candidate will replace one of two Veterinary Surgeons working within an established 2-weeks-on / 2-weeks-off rota, with flexibility around a similar full-time pattern for the right person. Please note this is not a part-time opportunity.

The practice is particularly keen to hear from Veterinary Surgeons who are confident in surgery, especially those comfortable performing caesarean sections, which form a regular part of the caseload. This role requires someone who is comfortable working completely sole charge, able to make sound clinical decisions independently, and confident managing both routine and more complex surgical cases.

The Role

  • Full-time position on a 2-weeks-on / 2-weeks-off rota
  • Working hours during rota blocks: 9:00am – 7:00pm across a 7-day week
  • Completely sole charge role with clinical freedom and autonomy
  • Mix of consultations, diagnostics, medical work-ups and surgery
  • Regular surgical caseload including routine procedures and frequent caesarean sections
  • Opportunity to build strong client relationships and maintain case continuity
  • Typically 2–3 surgical procedures per day
  • 15-minute consultations

The Ideal Candidate

The practice is seeking an adaptable, easy-going and well-organised Veterinary Surgeon who thrives in an independent setting and enjoys managing cases from start to finish.

Applicants should have:

  • A minimum of 2 years’ UK small animal experience
  • Confidence working sole charge
  • Strong surgical confidence, particularly with routine procedures and c-sections
  • Excellent planning and organisational skills
  • A calm, adaptable and team-oriented approach
  • Strong communication and client care abilities
  • Commitment to delivering high clinical standards and continuity of care

Facilities

This well-equipped independent practice offers modern facilities including:

  • Digital X-ray
  • Ultrasound
  • In-house laboratory
  • Dedicated dental suite
  • Two operating theatres
  • Separate dog and cat wards
  • On-site accommodation available
  • Large free car park

Responsibilities

  • Conduct consultations, examinations and diagnostics
  • Perform routine and non-routine surgical procedures
  • Confidently manage medical and surgical cases independently
  • Develop tailored treatment plans for patients
  • Maintain accurate clinical records
  • Communicate clearly and compassionately with clients
  • Work collaboratively with the wider support team
  • Uphold professional standards in accordance with RCVS guidelines

Benefits

  • Salary up to £84,000 per annum
  • Unique 2-weeks-on / 2-weeks-off rota
  • Significant time off between working blocks
  • Genuine clinical freedom within an independent practice
  • Diverse and rewarding surgical caseload
  • On-site accommodation
  • Free parking and large on-site car park
  • Supportive and friendly team culture
  • Opportunity for long-term case continuity and professional development
