  • Develop your clinical interests and qualifications with excellent certificate support and a diverse caseload across four practices and a state-of-the-art hospital - including vets with certificates in medicine, surgery, cardiology, ophthalmology and dentistry
  • Earn up to £90,000 DOE, with additional payments for on-call duties and work undertaken outside normal hours

The Opportunity

An exceptional and rare opportunity has arisen for a Veterinary Surgeon to join a long-standing, independent small animal practice in High Wycombe.

Deeply rooted in the local community, the practice combines modern veterinary healthcare with traditional values, delivering high standards of patient care alongside excellent, personalised client service. The team has a fantastic local reputation and prides itself on creating a fun, welcoming and supportive working environment.

You will join a well-established team of around twenty vets, alongside experienced RVNs, trainee nurses, receptionists and a practice manager. The practice has a proven track record of supporting, mentoring and retaining new graduates, with no sole-charge work expected until vets have developed the confidence to work independently.

Excellent Facilities

The practice is Tier 2 RCVS accredited and offers an impressive range of facilities across its sites.

The main High Wycombe surgery includes:

  • Five consulting rooms
  • Two clean, fully equipped operating theatres
  • Dedicated dental facilities
  • X-ray facilities
  • In-house laboratory
  • Complete ASIF orthopaedic kit
  • Live-linked computer systems across the branches

The recently built Stokenchurch hospital offers further advanced facilities, including:

  • Dedicated surgical suite and orthopaedic theatre
  • High-quality dental suite with restorative dentistry
  • DR X-ray
  • Advanced cardiology and ultrasound equipment
  • Endoscopy
  • Separate dog, cat and exotic wards
  • Dedicated inpatient facilities
  • Extensive equipment for advanced procedures

Clinical Development

The practice is passionate about supporting its vets to develop their clinical interests and gain further qualifications.

There is a wealth of experience within the team, including vets with certificates in medicine, surgery, cardiology, ophthalmology and dentistry, alongside several others working towards additional qualifications.

The busy and varied caseload provides an excellent environment for certificate study, while individual clinical interests are actively encouraged and supported.

Whether you are an experienced Veterinary Surgeon looking to broaden your skills or a vet keen to progress towards a certificate, you will have the support and caseload to develop your career.

The Rota

The role is full time, working a four-day week, with a set weekday off each week.

  • One whole weekday off every week
  • One early finish every week, with a 5pm finish on the day before your regular day off
  • Consultations start from 8am, with final consultations booked at 6.30pm
  • 15-minute consultations
  • Consulting is generally organised into 1–2 hour blocks
  • Vets are typically scheduled to operate for two mornings each week
  • Branch work is incorporated into the rota, with the role initially based predominantly at the High Wycombe and Stokenchurch sites
  • Opportunity to work at the other branches in future if desired
  • After 7pm, phones are diverted to Vets Now
  • Approximately 1:8 inpatient duty rota
  • Inpatient duty involves checking patients at around 9.30pm alongside the duty nurse; there are no out-of-hours phone calls
  • One weeknight inpatient duty approximately every other week
  • Weekend duties are shared across the team and include first- and second-call weekends, with the current staffing levels further diluting the frequency
  • Extra pay is provided for duties worked

Salary & Benefits

  • Salary up to £90,000 DOE
  • Additional £80 for each weeknight duty and £250 for each weekend duty
  • 30% of turnover generated for work undertaken beyond normal hours
  • Vets typically receive approximately £3,000–£6,000 per annum in additional payments on top of their basic salary
  • 5 weeks' annual leave plus bank holidays
  • Additional unpaid leave can be arranged for longer holidays
  • Time off in lieu for bank holidays worked
  • 5 days CPD annually
  • £2,000 CPD allowance, with flexibility and a willingness to exceed the budget where appropriate
  • Full support towards certificates and further professional development
  • RCVS and VDS fees paid
  • Pension contributions
  • Wellbeing support
  • Accommodation available on request, subject to availability

You will benefit from a varied caseload, outstanding clinical support, modern equipment, excellent opportunities for professional development and a rota designed to provide a strong work-life balance.
