The Opportunity
A busy veterinary clinic in Birmingham is seeking an experienced Small Animal Veterinary Surgeon / Clinical Lead to join its team. The clinic supports the work of a wider animal welfare charity, with profits reinvested back into the charity.
This is a surgery-focused role rather than a primarily consult-based position. The successful candidate will be a confident, efficient small-animal surgeon who is comfortable managing a busy surgical caseload and making independent clinical decisions when working sole charge.
Neutering will be a particularly important part of the role due to the volume of dogs cared for. The position will also involve emotionally challenging cases, including euthanasia, so clinical maturity, resilience and sound judgement are essential.
The caseload is approximately 70% charity and 30% private clients, providing a varied working environment.
Animal Welfare
The Veterinary Surgeon will work within established rescue, welfare and rehoming protocols, including contributing to assessments of dogs' suitability for rehoming. Experience in a rescue or charity environment would be beneficial, but a genuine commitment to animal welfare is essential.

- Able to work efficiently in a busy surgical environment
- Comfortable with sole-charge responsibility
- Confident managing euthanasia and emotionally challenging cases
- Strong clinical decision-making and communication skills
- Compassionate, resilient and committed to animal welfare
The Clinical Lead will also provide clinical leadership, helping to maintain high standards of patient care and support the ongoing development of the clinic.
Hours and Benefits
The role offers a 4-day working week, approximately 8:30am–6:30pm, with 1 in 4 Saturdays and no OOH or on-call requirements. Flexible working will be considered.
